Waconia paraprofessional earns associations' top honor

Amanda Phenix, a special education paraprofessional in Waconia Public Schools, is Education Minnesota’s 2026-2027 ESP of the Year. The winner was announced Oct. 24 at reception in St. Paul. Phenix has worked in the Waconia Public Schools for 21 years. As a special education paraprofessional, she works directly with students on Individualized Education Plans to meet the education goals established by their case manager and special education team. She does this through intentional engagement with students, checking in on their emotional and physical health throughout the day, and collaborating with teachers to shape lessons that meet students where they are at. Phenix says that building trust is one of the most important pieces of her job. “Building positive, lasting relationships with students in this setting is not optional—it’s essential,” she said. “It can take weeks, even months, to earn their trust. But once it’s there … students begin to open up, show up differently, and find success academically, socially, and emotionally.” Phenix’s colleagues praise her versatility and patience. Paul Tordoff, special education director at Waconia Public Schools, said Phenix “possesses a unique combination of compassion, expertise, and unwavering patience that makes her an ideal fit for our Waconia Middle School

Memorial golf tournament raises $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth

Sept. 12 was a perfect day for golf and a meaningful day to honor the memory of Noelle M. Anderson at the 27th annual Noelle M. Anderson Memorial Golf Tournament. More than 100 golfers gathered at Elk River Golf Course, raising $8,000 for Open Doors for Youth, this year’s beneficiary. Elliott and Chris Anderson presented the donation to Cindy Ley, executive director of Open Doors for Youth, which operates a drop-in center for youth ages 16-24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The organization recently opened The Next Door, a transitional housing program that provides a safe, supportive home for youth ages 18-24. In past years, tournament proceeds often funded scholarships for local high school students. Last year, the Andersons shifted to directing all funds raised to Open Doors for Youth to support the essential resources and services it provides to local youth. “We are thrilled that these funds can go directly to youth in need in our community,” Chris Anderson said.

ISD 728 weighs facility options after referendum defeat

Unofficial results from all 34 precincts showed 20,925 voters, or 55.46%, opposed the proposal, compared with 16,807 voters, or 44.54%, who supported it. The 4,118-vote margin left the district facing the challenge of addressing needs that Superintendent Andy Almos says remain even though the proposal did not receive enough support to move forward. “While we are disappointed, we respect the voters’ decision,” Almos said in a written response to the Star News. “We now need to listen carefully, understand the concerns that shaped the outcome, determine a path forward, and understand the tradeoffs of not moving this proposal.” Almos said he was encouraged by the community’s engagement and the questions raised during the district’s information process. He was hopeful heading into Election Day but did not take the outcome for granted. The result, he said, does not necessarily indicate which parts of the proposal voters opposed or what concerns ultimately determined the outcome. “It tells us this particular proposal did not receive enough support,” he said. “The result alone does not tell us whether the deciding concern was cost, the combination of projects, timing or something else.” The proposal included up to $350 million in bonds and a 10-year capital
