ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International
Airport (ROC) announced that the memorial that honors fallen members of the 98th Division will be replaced with a Veterans Welcoming Center and memorial.

According to ROC Airport, the previous memorial was vandalized and damaged in October 2021 and was taken off display because they believed it would have been disrespectful to the fallen soldiers and their families to see the vandalized memorial.

ROC Airport worked together with members of the 98th Division, local veterans
organizations, and the Monroe County Veterans Service Agency to come up with a plan of action to fix this problem.

The new Veterans Welcoming Center is part of the renovation project and will feature a Battlefield Cross paying tribute to all area residents who died in the conflict. It is said that it will include a plaque memorializing the five soldiers from the 98th Division who were recognized in the original display.
