ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester police officers past and present and members of the police union gathered Wednesday in Gates to honor those officers who have died.

The ceremony takes place each year, including a ringing of the bell, a 21 gun salute, and a lowering of the flag.

Rochester Police Locust Club President Geoffrey Wiater said while this event is organized in Rochester, it recognizes more than just the officers who serve in the city limits.

“Unfortunately we’ve had two members in the last 10 years who have given the ultimate sacrifice,” Wiater said. “Recently — Genesee County, in Syracuse, in Onondaga County, we’ve had three people that were giving their commitment to their community in this capacity as police officers, and they were killed in the line of duty.”
