ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Local businesses are joining forces for a program called “Healthy ROC Grocer.”

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans made the announcement Wednesday, saying the goal is to highlight stores that offer nutritious foods.

The City of Rochester currently has 24 grocers involved in the program. Participants must pass an evaluation of their healthier food options. Once accepted, the city will provide free resources like in-store signage, and advertising.

“When we think about infrastructure we normally think about roads and bridges. When we think about public safety we think about police and fire, but the key to all of this is quality of life,” said City Councilmember Michael Patterson. “Accessible, affordable food in your neighborhood is vitally important to your quality of life.”

The city will continue to accept new stores on an ongoing basis.
