An elderly driver is in a critical condition at a hospital after hitting another vehicle at high speed in Robbinsdale Monday morning, shearing her vehicle in two.

The crash happened on 36th Avenue North just after 11:20 a.m., with police receiving multiple 911 calls stating that a crashed vehicle had split in two and the driver need to be extricated.

Police believe driver of the vehicle split in two, an 80-year-old woman, was driving westbound on 36th "at an exceptionally high rate of speed," Robbinsdale PD said, when she struck the center median curb center west of Regent Avenue North and then struck a stop light post.

She continued westbound and hit a minivan that had just turned onto 36th Avenue from Cub Foods.

The 80-year-old was extricated from her vehicle and taken to North Memorial Hospital, where her condition is life-threatening.

The driver of the minivan, a woman in her 60s, was treated at the scene and released.

    The crash is under investigation.
