RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A new survey is giving residents a chance to share their thoughts about what they’d like to see done to one of Richmond’s oldest bridges.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) released a survey about the replacement of Mayo Bridge , hoping for feedback about the project.

Manchester Alliance President Janet Woodka said the bridge is over 100 years old and is due for improvements.

“I would love to see this bridge carry less traffic,” Woodka said. “There is no dedicated bike lane, the sidewalks are pretty narrow, and the sidewalks really don’t have a curb to them anymore. So, you know, I would like to see, you know, something that makes people feel safer when they walk across the bridge.”

The original construction project included replacing the superstructure, while the piers would remain in place. However, the VDOT survey explained based on a recent analysis, it was better to just replace the entire thing.

“I think we have a historic opportunity to really think about how we connect the two sides of the river,” Woodka said.

Woodka added that because Mayo’s Island is on track to eventually become a part of the James River Park System , the upcoming bridge project has potential to positively shape the future of the surrounding area.

“I think that the river should be something that unites us, not divides us and I think this bridge could be a wonderful opportunity to be that kind of connection,” Woodka said.

Woodka explained that in addition to this survey, several community organizations will be hosting a forum about the project as well.

The Manchester Alliance, Shockoe Partnership, Bike Walk RVA, Venture Richmond, BridgePark, and Friends of the James River Park will host this community meeting on Monday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Studio Two Three located at 109 W. 15 th Street. Attendees are encouraged to register ahead of time.

According to VDOT, a Citizen Information Meeting is also anticipated for Fall 2024. During this meeting, VDOT will present concepts for public input.

The current VDOT survey will be open until June 9.
