Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Ahead of the seasonal opening of Richmond-area pools, the American Red Cross is urging Central Virginia residents to consider working as a lifeguard. The organization says the nationwide lifeguard shortage is still an issue.

“About a third of the pools here in Virginia are reporting that they have had a challenge in meeting their hiring goals,” said Jonathan McNamara, Communications Director for the Red Cross of Virginia.

Not having enough lifeguards can impact a pool’s ability to open and operate safely, as well as affect a pool’s ability to offer swimming lessons to young people.

McNamara added that lifeguard training doesn’t take long through the Red Cross, and it can be done mostly online.

“If you’re a high school student [or] a college student who’s looking for a way to give back while also making some money this summer, we’re really encouraging you to consider being a lifeguard,” McNamara said.

The Red Cross has more information about how to become a lifeguard on its website .
