See the designs for the Diamond District baseball stadium

The city last week released renderings for the long-anticipated baseball stadium set to anchor the Diamond District .

Why it matters: It's the first look at the decades-in-the-making replacement for the nearly 40-year-old Diamond stadium.

Zoom in: The stadium will have a beer garden, a party terrace, premium suites, a barbecue pit picnic area and play areas for kids, including climbing boulders inspired by the ones in the James River.

    • The plans call for seating for 10,000 and separate clubhouses for the Flying Squirrels and the VCU Rams, who will play there.
    • And the stadium is positioned adjacent to Sports Backers Stadium and near the current one.

The big picture: In 2022, the city selected a development partner to execute its vision for Diamond District , including a new baseball stadium.

    • The city set spring 2023 for the groundbreaking as it was facing a 2025 deadline set by Minor League Baseball to provide the Richmond Flying Squirrels an upgraded new home or risk losing the team.
    • Last year , a new 2026 deadline for the stadium was hashed out, with construction slated to begin this month.

What we're watching: Construction should now begin this summer, the city's chief administrative officer Lincoln Saunders told the Times-Dispatch last week .
