Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A total Solar Eclipse will cross North America on Monday, April 8. Although Virginia is not in the path of totality, viewers in the Commonwealth will be able to see the moon partially mask the sun today.

Here in the Richmond metro region, we will see a partial eclipse starting at 2:02 this afternoon. It will reach 83% sun coverage at 3:18 p.m. The partial eclipse is set to end at 4:03 p.m. in the River City.

There are several watch parties planned around town, including at the Science Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Living Museum and at VCU. Several local school systems have adjusted their schedules today due to the eclipse.

The path of totality (where the sun is 100% covered) will include parts of Indiana, Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and western and northern New York state.

AAA expects the event to affect traffic, as people travel to the nearest sighting of the phenomenon. The travel agency provided these safety tips for drivers:

    • Keep headlights on.
    • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
    • Do NOT wear eclipse glasses while driving.
    • Do NOT try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
    • Do NOT pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
    • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
    • Be aware of other drivers who may be watching the sun and not the road.
    • Be mindful of pedestrians that many be walking around with their eyes on the sky.
