We asked Kansas voters at the polls about Hamilton & Sen. Marshall. Here's what they said

After months of debates, rallies, heated campaigning and a late national spotlight, voters in Wyandotte and Johnson counties turned out in earnest Tuesday to weigh in on Kansas’ U.S. Senate seat. The race between incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton has been hotly contested in recent months and even drew visits from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who aimed to boost Marshall as polls showed Hamilton gaining ground. Polling has shown a tight race, which in itself was remarkable for a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. The Star spoke with 16 voters in the two counties throughout Tuesday morning and afternoon, six in Wyandotte County and 10 in Johnson County. The decidedly unscientific results: Seven said they voted for Marshall, four said they voted for Hamilton, four declined to say whom they voted for and one said he voted for a write-in candidate. Here’s how voters at polling sites throughout the two counties were thinking about the race on Election Day. Views from the polls on Election Day Marshall supporters Amy and Thomas Drinnon, of Kansas City, Kansas, said they were anti-abortion and said the issue was

Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

Kansas Is Home To A Massive Christmas Warehouse That Makes Holiday Shopping Magical

More than 40 kinds of poinsettias fill one holiday shop, and some of them aren’t red or white at all. That alone made me look twice. The same place has been spraying fake snow onto real trees since 1964. Every winter, the greenhouses glow with twinkle lights from floor...

The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

Paul Rudd, Overland Park get a shout-out when CNN announces Adam Hamilton victory

Welp, we did not have “Paul Rudd” on our election night bingo card. But the “Ant-Man” actor scored a surprise shout-out as Jake Tapper on CNN announced that Adam Hamilton defeated Kansas Senator Roger Marshall in a shocking win Tuesday. Tapper threw the live coverage to Hamilton headquarters in Overland Park, “the home of Paul Rudd,” he said. Rudd, born in New Jersey, spent much of his childhood in Johnson County then studied theater at the University of Kansas. And Tapper would know that because the CNN anchor is a regular celebrity guest at Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser that Rudd co-hosts. In October, Rudd co-hosted a get-out-the-vote event in New York with “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The event raised money for Latino Victory Project and Onward Together , nonprofit groups that work on voter mobilization and getting people involved in the political process. Jimmy Fallon, Adam Scott and Rita Wilson were among the celebrities who participated.
