Retired Erie doctor grows, donates 30,000 pounds of corn to hungry
Somehow, some way, Jim Renshaw Jr. was determined to grow a field of sweet corn and get it to people struggling with hunger. It was 2008. Renshaw was a dedicated board member at Second Harvest Food Bank, and he retired as owner of Renshaw Insurance when he was 65. That year, he planted about an acre of corn on his own Fairview property, wrangled neighbors, friends and family to lend him equipment, time and effort, and he succeeded in growing and picking enough corn to distribute throughout the food bank's 11-county system. "He was passionate about the nonprofits," his wife, Pat Renshaw, said. "And he just loved the outdoors." The food bank does not have a record of how much corn he gave them that first year, but in the past 10 years, now under the leadership of retired Erie doctor Jack Yakish, the project has yielded 250,000 pounds of corn, 30,000 just in 2026. "For 15 years, (Renshaw) grew progressively more sweet corn and donated it to the food bank," Yakish said. Jim and Pat Renshaw were patients of Yakish. "Every year when it was time for his physical, Jim Renshaw tells me about his corn project," Yakish said.
