The Tulsa World newspaper, along with basketball insider Adam Zagoria, are reporting that Nevada head men's basketball coach Steve Alford is a candidate to take over the Cowboys basketball program.

The Tulsa Word reported that Alford had expressed interest in the opening before the Wolf Pack had received its berth in the NCAA Tournament on March 17.

Zagoria who contributes college basketball articles to the New York Times and several other publications, reported Tuesday that Alford, along with Colorado State coach Niko Medved and Grand Canyon coach Bryce Drew, are among the top candidates to take over the Cowboys. Previous Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton was fired earlier in March.

The Stillwater (Oklahoma) News Press reported Alford is one contender for the Oklahoma State position, but also listed about a dozen other possible candidates.

CBS Sports also lists several candidates for the opening, but Alford is not among them.

Alford, 59, completed his fifth season at Nevada last Thursday after the Wolf Pack lost to Dayton, 63-60, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

He signed a 10-year contract with Nevada in April 2019 and said at the time that it was his final coaching stop. His buyout to leave Nevada is $2 million before June 30, 2024.

He has led the Wolf Pack to the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons and is 96-59 overall at Nevada in five seasons. The Wolf Pack finished this season 26-8 overall.

Alford has coached at five schools over 29 seasons, including Missouri State, Iowa, New Mexico, UCLA and Nevada. He is 11-13 in the NCAA Tournament all-time.

Boynton was the Cowboys coach for seven seasons and was making $3 million per year there. Alford will make $1.2 million at Nevada next year.
