Homeless Point In Time Count, An Exchange
I saw a post about the last Continuum of Care board meeting and the meeting packet. The post I saw was trumpeting how the efforts by all the different agencies involved have been successful at lowering the number of homeless in our county. On the surface, the numbers look good, but I question if they are really that good when they are put into context with other statistics.

Farewell To The Bewildered Pig
In early 2019 I was visiting Mendocino County frequently, looking for a new place to live after a twenty-year absence, during which time I lived in Southern California raising my children. It was a huge move for me. When I house-hunted, Philo was starting to pull me in, and in the beginning of March that year I arrived in town not only to look at a Philo property with local realtor Sheri from Rancheria Realty, but also to take my daughter Cassidy, who had recently moved back into her family’s home in Comptche with her dad Mike, to her 24th birthday dinner.

The 99th Mendocino County Fair & Apple Show
We got a big break on the weather this year: warm but not too hot — perfect. As Monday rolled around the skies were cloudy and gray. What a bummer it would have been to have to cover up all those cute and carefully put together fair outfits with jackets. As usual the young girls all looked like beautiful flowers even if most of them were wearing black. All the young boys looked like flower lovers which is how nature intended it. The stroller brigade was out in force and the babies were just as adorable as they always are. What other occasion gives new parents the chance to show off their new children to everyone all in one spot? As a people-watching destination the Fair cannot be beat.

A father died while kayaking with his son in a cove south of Russian Gulch State Park in Mendocino County. Seventy-year-old Gordon Bruce Spence and his son were kayaking Sunday morning when the vessel was knocked over by a wave. That caused the two to be separated and the son couldn’t get to Spence for 15 minutes due to strong south winds and waves. The son eventually pulled his father to shore where he got a passerby to call for help. Unfortunately, Spence, who had a pre-existing medical condition, could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
