Lafayette man who exposed clergy abuse by Acadiana priest beaten to death in Lake Charles; suspect arrested
A Lafayette man who played a crucial role in exposing clerical abuse in the US has died after being beaten in Lake Charles. Scott Gastal, who testified at age 11 against a priest who abused him, was 50 years old. Lake Charles police found Gastal with severe head injuries in a motel parking lot on March 2. He died nine days later in a Lafayette hospital. The suspect, Reese Chaumont, 28, of Lake Charles, faces a second-degree murder charge. Chaumont's bond is set at $650,000, and he remains in custody. Gastal's testimony in the 1980s led to a $1 million settlement from the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette for his family. His death has deeply affected the community of clergy abuse survivors. The case of Gastal's initial abuse by Gilbert Gauthe highlighted the widespread issue of clerical molestation in the Catholic Church.
