A water main break canceled school Tuesday morning at Ravenna's kindergarten building, leaving parents scrambling to find a way to retrieve their children.

Laura Hebert, superintendent of Ravenna City Schools, said the break took place in front of West Park Elementary School at 8:30 a.m., just as students were being dropped off by parents and buses were rolling in. Parents in the drop-off line were able to take their students home. Messages were sent out to parents, stating that students who rode the bus would need to be picked up.

"We brought in bottled water and Port-o-Johns for students who were waiting for their rides," she said. "The timing of the water main break was unfortunate, as it was too late to give any advance notice."

Hebert stated that the students couldn't be sent home by bus because parents might not have been home.

A parent posted an image from the school district's Parent Square app on the Facebook group Portage County and Neighbors, which notified parents of the emergency and that school would be closed for the day. The building would be without running water for at least six hours, parents were told.

Parents also were notified that Jones Road was closed and parents would need to access the school via Scranton Street.
