Swanda showed off her versatility by...

Burlesque star was distraction, but Akron pitcher kept cool in title game | Mark J. Price
Nothing could break Stan Sipka’s concentration when he pitched a game. Not even the Akron burlesque star cheering on the sideline. The 89-year-old Cuyahoga Falls resident had to smile when he read our feature story about local striptease legend Kiki Arnold. It reminded him of his first (and only) encounter with the nightclub entertainer in 1948.

High school baseball: (13) Mayfield vs (3) Walsh Jesuit district semifinal capsule
Mayfield’s path: Defeated Massillon Washington, 10-0 On Deck: Winner advances to play the winner of (5) University and (6) Hoover in a district final at Munson on May 23. For the Record: After a slow start, Mayfield has grown comfortable and confident in the batter’s box. A big boost came with Holden Cope’s return from injury as the Wildcats went on a surge to claim the WRC championship. Cope has paced the team with a .456 batting average and 23 RBI. Along with the combination of Christophe Alexander (.341 average, 19 RBI) and Ethan Claflin (.327 average), it makes a dangerous middle portion of the order. Add in the speed of JD Sega and Danny D’Agostino, and there are a lot of threats for the Wildcats at the plate. Both Rocco Monastero and AJ Rogers have been good on the mound this season as a 1-2 threat but both have had challenging performances at times. But the faith they have in the players behind them has helped the team go on a strong run. … Walsh Jesuit almost lost its second-round contest with Riverside. The Warriors were up 4-1 going to the top of the seventh but a three-run rally by the Beavers forced extra innings. But Aiden Henry came through with a single that brought home Jake Brubaker. Henry has been the consistent bat for the Warriors this season, hitting .311 with 13 RBI but the pair of Matthew Mansbery (.296, 14 RBI) and Zach Swiderski (.286, 13 RBI) have been a good combo punch as well. Walsh Jesuit’s pitching has propelled the Warriors back to the district round. Its rotation is headlined by Caleb Mecurio (1.34 ERA, 27 Ks) and Sam Pierce (2.50 ERA, 30 Ks).
