REALMS Charter School recently recruited new leadership
REALMS Charter School Elsa J. Hennings President, REALMS Governing Board– After a rigorous search for a new Superintendent at the local public charter school, Ridgecrest Elementary Academy for Language, Music, and Science (REALMS), including two days of interviews with the Personnel Committee and another round of interviews with the Governing Board, the REALMS Board announced the appointment of Donald Beene as the new Superintendent, effective May 20, 2024. Beene had previously served as the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for REALMS since December 2022.
Farmers Market moves to Wednesday night on Balsam
News Review Staff Writer– — Wednesday, May 1, was the inaugural City of Ridgecrest Farmers Market, which will be held weekly on Balsam Street from 5 pm to 8 pm (excluding Christmas and New Year’s Day). Do not worry; they are making plans for an alternate location when the weather does not cooperate.
Is it just me? The beauty pageant that got away
Ridgecrest officially has a bonafide beauty queen living among us. Last weekend, Aria Stout was crowned Teeny Tiny Miss East Kern County for 2024 in Tehachapi. In addition to capturing the crown, Stout was also declared Miss Photogenic in the pageant.
Larkspur standoff ends with arrest
A standoff between Ridgecrest Police and a man who they said was suicidal ended peacefully shortly after noon Tuesday. Police were dispatched to Larkspur Street with reports of a suicidal elderly man with a firearm. A roadblock was established to protect civilians while the police encircled the suspect's home with their vehicles. The standoff went on for roughly 20 minutes with police commanding the suspect to drop his weapon until he attempted to aim at the officers.
Henry receives distinguished Kiwanis award
On Wednesday, the Kiwanis Club of Ridgecrest announced long time and loyal member Virginia Henry recently received the 2024 Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha District Children's Fund Distinguished Service Award. Henry was presented by the Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor, Carole Farris, at the Division Council meeting in Delano.
Crusaders win on Senior Day, prepare for playoff
It was the finally game of the season and Senior Day for the Immanuel Christian softball team when it hosted Bishop junior varsity softball squad in a non-league match. The Crusaders defeated the JV Broncos 18-2, to finished the season with an 11-5 overall record and an undefeated 7-0 in the Hi-Lo League to qualify for CIF-Central Division 6 playoffs beginning Wednesday, May 15th.
Burroughs falls in the first round of playoff
The Burroughs boys’ tennis team made an early exit from the CIF Division 3 Team Playoffs, with a first-round 4-14 loss to Upland High School. Both the Burros and the Highlanders finished second in their respective leagues. The Highlanders only league losses were to Los Osos, who were ranked No. 7 in Division 1.
Community unites in prayer for annual Kiwanis breakfast
As many in the community still slumbered in their beds, a large crowd of faithful believers gathered at the Desert Christian Center and united in prayer. On the first Thursday of each May, the Kiwanis Club of Ridgecrest hosts the annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in observation of the National Day of Prayer.

Broncs jayvee team walks off over Boron
Kern Valley’s jayvee baseball team got it done in the bottom of the sixth when they played at home versus Boron. The Broncs won the see-saw battle with a walk off double in their final at bat. The final score favored Kern Valley 11-10. Setting the stage, the Broncs trailed 10-9 as they came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Jackson Price worked out a walk and started the game-winning rally. He swiped two bases to wind up on third with the potential tying run. One out later, Wyatt Blagg delivered run with a double to tie the game at 10 apiece. Blake Baughman stepped in the box and connected for the game-winner. Blagg raced home and the victory went to Kern Valley.

Kern County Public Works, in partnership with Caltrans' District 9, will be hosting a Clean California Tire Drop Off Day Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until capacity is reached.
