Rancho Santa Fe's Henry Hou, a freshman at The Bishop's School, won a special award at the recent California National History Day competition held in Sacramento on April 21. Henry won the National Maritime Historical Society Award by the National Maritime Historical Society for his project “Prowlers of the Sea: How Submarines Changed the 20 th Century Warfare.”

Henry earned the opportunity to compete in the statewide competition by winning the senior individual exhibit championship at the National History Day San Diego County Competition. His project also won the San Diego County Libraries' Research Award.

Henry was just one participant out of more than 1,500 students from 248 schools across 25 counties in the state. In the year-long academic competition similar to a science fair, students choose a topic, conduct research and present their work in a variety of forms.

Henry’s research exhibit detailed the role that submarines played in World War II and their lasting impact today. As a San Diego native, he has developed a strong interest in Navy military history and hopes his project raises awareness about the sacrifices and contributions of marine service men and women.
