Early morning showers won’t be the end of our rain activity this evening. Isolated thunderstorms are expected to pop up around the region. Heavier downpours along with lighting and thunder will be found with the larger storm clusters. These storms will likely be through east central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin. The southern part of Burnett, Washburn, and Sawyer Counties could see some isolated severe storms on the weaker end. Meaning some hail and winds over 50mph with harder rains.
Man sentenced for area burglaries
During an April 16 hearing in Sawyer County Circuit Court, a Turtle Lake man was sentenced to four years probation and assessed restitution for cabin break-ins in the towns of Meteor, Weirgor and Winter during early 2021. Hwy. 77 rehab project to begin May 13
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will rehabilitate five miles of State Hwy. 77 from the junction with Hwy. 63 in Hayward to County Road K in the town of Hayward beginning Monday, May 13. The project will consist of removing a portion of the existing pavement and placing new asphalt pavement cleaning, lining or repairing culverts; and placing new pavement markings. During construction, Highway 77 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter daytime single-lane closes, controlled by flagging. The project is scheduled for completion in early July.
Boys golfers play in Rice Lake invitatonal
On Thursday May 9, the Hayward Hurricanes boys golf team placed 13th out of 18 teams at the Rice Lake Invitational at Turtleback Golf Course. The meet co-medalists were Chase Van Ranst of Baldwin-Woodville and Caden Hebert of Eau Claire Memorial, both of whom shot a 71. Eagle Scout creates 'lure libraries' in Hayward area
Three “Lure Libraries” have been created in the Hayward area, thanks to an idea hatched by Illinois Boy Scout Ethan Constantine as part of his Eagle Scout project. The concept is similar to the now-popular “Little Free Libraries,” but for fishing lures. The Hayward Hurricanes softball team picked up two more wins last week, 12-7 over Cumberland and 14-6 over Barron, to improve their record to 12-0 in conference play and 14-4 overall. A Stone Lake woman, who was arrested on April 25 after police say they recovered approximately $2,300 worth of methamphetamine during a traffic stop, has been charged with intending to deliver drugs and possession of cocaine. HAYWARD — After a four-month investigation into drug activity throughout Sawyer, Washburn and Barron counties, four persons have been arrested, according to the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department. Duluth, Minn. - Starting Monday, the Munger Landing Boat Launch and parking lots will be closed through Thursday, May 23. The closure is due to paving work and other restoration efforts. The DNR will also be installing a new fishing pier. Work is part of the ongoing effort to delist the St. Louis River as a Great Lakes Area of Concern due to past pollution. Some areas may remain fenced off to protect regrowing habitats.

Ziigwan Run Series underway
The first event in the Ziigwan Bimibaatoo Spring Run-Walk Series was held Wednesday May 1 at the Honor the Earth Pow Wow grounds. There was a nice turnout, with 46 participants who enjoyed the new trail course this year. Josie Nelson won the event in 7:46 and Brandon Belille came in second in 7:52. The series will continue each Wednesday through June 5, with registration at 4:30 p.m. and the run-walk at 5 p.m. Fees are $5 for adults and $1 for students.
