Slight Chances for Rain Return

East Texas (KLTV) - Fair skies continue this evening with very warm temperatures. Tonight, expect clear skies and a light breeze. Temperatures will drop into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees by daybreak. Thursday and Friday will be hot again with a light breeze and a very slight chance for rain. Best rain chances are still very low but will be mainly in northern counties in the afternoon and evening hours. Those slight chances for rain may continue through the weekend. By early next week, it’s back to just hot and humid again with highs in the triple digits continuing through the week. By the end of next week, temperatures may barely fall out of the triple digits with a return of slight chances for rain.

Fire danger remains high across East Texas

MARSHALL, Texas - Fire danger remains elevated across East Texas as hot temperatures, and a lack of significant rainfall continues to create ideal conditions for wildfires. According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, firefighters responded to 22 wildfires across East Texas over the weekend, burning approximately 180 acres of timber, brush and grassland.

Tyler and Newton County in Texas have issued a burn ban due to extremely dry conditions, with the Keetch-Byram Drought Index reaching 701. Tyler and Newton County has issued a burn ban after dry, hot conditions pushed the county's soil moisture measurement to some of its driest levels, according to county officials.

Extreme Heat & High Fire Danger may continue thru the end of August | August 18, 2026

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - There have been no major changes to the forecast; East Texas will continue to experience hot and mostly sunny afternoons for the foreseeable future. Daily highs will be in the upper 90s and triple digits for the next 7 to 10 days, heat alerts from the National Weather Service will likely continue. There are low-end chances for rain in the forecast, but overall, most of East Texas will stay dry through the end of August. New today, both Smith and Gregg counties have issued burn bans. For counties not under burn bans, the fire danger is still high to very high. In the long-range, no major changes either. Warmer and drier than normal conditions are expected through the end of the month. Being a Tuesday, NOAA and the Climate Prediction Center did release new long-range tropical weather outlooks that depict low chance areas for potential development into early September.
