High School Roundup: Highlights from Monday and the weekend

BASEBALL

Division I

Cumberland 8, Coventry 0

Liam Monahan fired six scoreless innings and his offense provided ample support as the Clippers completed a season sweep of the Oakers. Luke Plumer drilled a two-run double in the top of the first to get it started and the visitors took off from there. Two-run singles by Josh Lyon and Tyler Hurteau in the top of the sixth help put away what was a 3-0 game.

North Kingstown 11, Toll Gate 1 (5 inn.)

North Kingstown's bats came alive led by Brendan Venditto, who went 3-for-3, scoring 2 runs and 4 RBI in the Skippers' win over the Titans. Also contributing to the win were Chris Ciarinello and Ronan Gately , who each had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Quincy Rome who added 2 hits and an RBI. Ben Davis earned the win on the mound. Dylan Perrault had a double and an RBI for the Titans.

Portsmouth 2, Moses Brown 1

The Patriots scored a run in the first inning, and another in the seventh, and that was enough to give them their 10th win in 18 games. Oliver Rey went the distance, pitching a 2-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The only run he allowed was unearned. He also helped his own cause, collecting 3 hits, driving in a run and stealing a base. John Mass singled in the other run. Tucker DeWolf and Bryden Menard had the hits for the 8-11 Quakers.

Division II

Barrington 5, Mount St. Charles 0

Quinn Murphy singled, doubled, tripled and drove in 1 run as Barrington (14-3) recorded its eighth consecutive victory. Fin Thomson doubled and tripled for the Eagles while Gabe Tanous tripled and Ben Nowinski added his first hit of the season, an RBI double. Ted Coon earned the save by pitching 3 innings of hitless, scoreless ball in relief of starter and winner Connor Marley , who only allowed 5 singles in 4 innings of work.

Division III

Scituate/Rocky Hill 10, Times2/Paul Cuffee/St. Patrick 0

John O'Hara drove in 3 runs with 2 hits and pitched 6 innings of 2-hit ball and the Spartans broke open a close game with 7 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and that gave them their 12th win in 16 games. Bryan Guy doubled in 2 runs for the victors. The co-op team falls to 5-10.

Rogers 13, Davies 0 (Sat.)

Matt Lynch struck out 5 while tossing a 2-hitter over 5 innings and Ben Borgueta drove in 3 runs on a pair of hits as the Vikings (13-4) cruised to victory in the mercy-rule shortened game on Saturday. Myles Robinson and Ben Cofsky had the hits for the Patriots (3-13)

East Greenwich 3, St. Raphael 1 (Sat.)

The Avengers (11-6) used 3 two-out hits to win their fourth game in a row and secure the top spot in their subdivision with a victory over the Saints. Alex Tullo and Brady O'Brien each rapped two-out singles in the second inning to put EG ahead, 2-1. Cade Thomas drilled a two-double in the fifth to drive in an insurance run. Sean Giannelli pitched his fourth complete game of the season to earn his sixth win. Evan Candelario drove in the Saints lone run. Harold Fernandez went the distance on the mound for St. Ray's, now 9-7.

Cumberland 10, Coventry 0 (Fri.)

Ben Jahnz tossed a 3-hitter, and Tyler Hurteau and Owen Koczera each had 3 hits and 2 RBI as they lifted the Clippers to the 6-inning victory on Friday. Andrew Ray didn't have a hit but still drove in 4 runs for Cumberland (12-5) on a pair of sacrifices. Logan Downey had 2 hits for the Oakers, now 8-9.

Westerly 10, Woonsocket 6 (Sat.)

Jack Tenuta drove in 4 runs and Josh Fernando brought home 2 more as the Bulldogs handled the Villa Novans. On the mound, James Hooper earned the win, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs over 4⅓ innings. For Woonsocket, Juleus Perez was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI in the loss.

Westerly 4, Mount St. Charles 3 (Sat.)

Jayden Parker paced the Bulldogs, going 2-for 6 with 3 RBI and Andrew Bozek had a pair of hits and drove home a run as Westerly edged the Mount on Saturday. Zack Miner threw 8 innings of 1-hit ball with 9 strikeouts to get the win. Brayden Slack led the Mounties, going 3-for-6 with 2 RBI in the loss. This game began on May 15, but was suspended due to darkness. It was finished Saturday.

Burrillville 7, Chariho 6 (Sat.)

Cam Potter 's RBI single in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Broncos edged the Chargers on Saturday. Leadoff hitter Jordan Furtado belted 3 hits in 4 at-bats and Potter finished with 2 hits for Burrillville, now 7-9. Chariho, which outhit their opponents, 9-8, falls to 6-12. Gavin Apice had 3 hits.

Barrington 14, Narragansett 1 (Sun.)

Quinn Murphy belted a pair of doubles and drove in 2 runs as Barrington swept its season series from Narragansett and in the process won its seventh consecutive game. Trevor Snow was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI while Gabe Tanous also was 2-for-2 with 1 RBI for the Eagles (13-3). In addition, Fin Thomson hit a 2-run double while Chris Promades had 2 RBI on a single and a bases-loaded walk. Zach Previte drove in Narragansett’s run on a double.

Prout 19, Mount St. Charles 2 (Sun.)

Nolan Rodman drove in 5 runs on 3 hits, including a grand slam, and Cam Randal also homered with the bases loaded as the Crusaders improved to 10-8 with the victory on Sunday that was called after 5 innings due to the mercy rule. Prout opened with a 6-run first inning and added 7 more in the second. Mount falls to 4-13.

Narragansett 2, Prout 1 (Sat.)

East Greenwich 7, Middletown 1 (Sat.)

Anders Nelson pitched and hit the Avengers to their 10th victory of the season on Saturday. Nelson threw 5 innings of shutout ball, giving up just 2 hits and striking out six. Offensively, Nelson drove in 2 with 2 hits. Alex DeTomasis (2 hits, 2 walks) and Cade Thomas (4 walks) each reached base four times for EG. That duo also combined for a huge inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 6th when Thomas followed a catch in center field with a bullet to DeTomasis at the plate to throw out an Islander trying to tag up. Evan Levasseur had 2 hits for Middletown.

North Providence 5, Chariho 4 (Sat.)

East Providence 11, West Warwick 9 (Sat.)

Shelby Quinn hit two home runs and drove in seven as the Townies handled the Wizards on senior night. East Providence had 12 hits and West Warwick had 11 in this high-scoring affair. Quinn and Marianna Pina each had 3 for EP, while Trinity Provencher collected 2 hits in three at bats. For WW, Jaymilee Duarte and Olivia Zajdek each drove in two runs for West Warwick. Pina earned the win, surrendering 7 hits and 3 runs over 5 innings, striking out one and walking one.

Division I

Moses Brown 5, Smithfield 4

Margaret Mashamba drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk to help lead the Quakers past the Sentinels in a 10-inning affair. Coco Medeiros hit a home run and drove in 2 in the win. In the circle, Anna Costello struck out 18 batters, allowed 4 hits and 3 runs over 10 innings while walking 2. Costello also blasted a home run in the sixth. For the Sentinels, Skyla Oliveira went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and pitcher Crystal Cacador threw all 10 innings, striking out 13 in the loss.

Lincoln/North Providence 11, Toll Gate 0

Makenna Heon drilled 3 hits and drove in 2 runs, Mariana Xavier and Riddhi Misty each had 2 hits and 2 RBI in a game that was called after 6 innings because of the mercy rule. Pitcher Anna Danis went the distance, scattering 7  hits, and Charlotte Labossiere also had a pair of hits for L/NP, now 9-4. Reagan Motta and Abby O'Connor had 2 hits apiece for the Titans, 5-8.

Division II

Westerly 9, Mt. Hope 0

Sophia Valentini fired a 2-hit shutout, striking out 8, and Alex Stoehr , Madison Mankoff , Emma Caracciolo , Dacia Gingerella , Tori Gabriele , Sara Arnold , Abby Emery and Isabella Austin each drove in a run and the Bulldogs improved their record to 12-1, the best in the division. Ava Waddell and Sofia Haberman had the hits for the Huskies, now 2-11.

Prout 7, St. Raphael 0

Lily Sheehan was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI, Giselle Jeffrey was 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and an RBI, and Emma Manzo drove in a pair as the Crusaders handled the Saints. Lucy Kaiser went the distance in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing just 2 hits in the victory.

Portsmouth 17, Middletown 2

The Patriots opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first and scored in nearly every other frame in this 5-inning contest. Kaylyn Aubuchon (4-4 with a home run) and Kaelyn Mahoney (3-4) led the way with 3 RBIs each, and Megan Malone (4-5) and Mia Ruggieri (2-4) with 2 RBIs each. Ruggieri pitched 5 innings and struck out 6 for the win. For the Islanders, Ella Bolano was 2-2 with an RBI in the loss.

Scituate 9, Barrington 7

Victoria Geisser led the Spartans, going 3-3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored, and Maura Pendergast drove in a pair, as part of Scituate's 11-hit attack. In the circle, Kate Nickerson and Isabella Defusco combined to strike out 10. For the Eagles, Ariana Renzi and Genevieve Geiser each had 2 RBIs in the loss.

Division III

Cranston East 12, Rogers 2

The Thunderbolts plated five runs in the second inning to take command and reach the 13-0 mark in the standings. Nevaeh Fatorma led Cranston East with 2 RBI and Kiara McGarty had 3 walks and swiped 2 bases. Reliver Lexi Montalban earned the win for the 'Bolts, allowing 1 hit and no runs over 4 innings, while striking out 4. For the Vikings, Lillian Reilly and Tess Margolis each collected a hit in the loss.

La Salle 3, Moses Brown 1 (Sat.)

Rams improved to 17-0 in the league and 20-0 overall as they slipped mast Moses Brown. Phoenyx Silva was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and Samantha Sell had a double and an RBI. Kayleigh Gouchie started the game, pitched 3 innings and struck out 4. Hailey Vigneau earned the win, throwing the last 4 innings, and struck out six. Coco Medeiros tallied the only 2 hits of the game for MB with an RBI.

East Providence 11, West Warwick 9 (Sat.)

Division I

Moses Brown 15, Portsmouth 5

Led by the play of Cam Danckak (4 goals, 4 assists) and Andrew Corsi (4 goals, 2 assists), the Quakers rolled to victory over the Patriots. Also adding to the MB offense were Recce Chase and Peter Sarnowski who had 2 goals and 1 assist each. Robert Mairs had 2 goals and 1 assist and Will Howard had one tally and 2 helpers for Portsmouth in the loss.

Barrington 6, North Kingstown 1

Colin Hope, Jake Ignall and Onson Tieu each had 3 goals, while keeper Grant Isdale made 6 saves in the Eagles win.

Division IV

Tiverton 13, Rogers 10

Seth Aguiar led his team with 5 goals and 1 assist, Miles Cormier contributed 3 goals and 2 assists and Owen Messinger had 2 goals and 3 assists as the Tigers (9-5) topped the Vikings (10-6). David Rivera had 5 goals and 1 assist and Max Martland had 3 goals for Rogers, which will face Tiverton again in a quarterfinal playoff game later this week.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Division II

Smithfield 16, Mt. Hope 5

Annabelle Lally whipped in 5 goals, Avery Areson contributed 3 goals 4 assists and Caitlyn Kelley had 2 goals and 2 assists for the Sentinels (6-7). Marie Lacy notched 2 goals for the Huskies (1-12).

Division III

Ponaganset 8, PCD 6

Lana Hess led the Chieftains with 4 goals, and teammates Kelsey Lhereux and Maggie Laenix each scored a pair. For PCD, Ellie Cordischi led the way with 3 goals in the loss.

Chariho 18, Pilgrim 2

Chaia Elwell just keeps on finding the back of the net as she scored 7 goals and added 3 assists in the Chargers win over the Patriots. Also contributing to the victory were Kayden Jaillet with 3 goals and 2 assists and Lola DosSantos with 2 tallies and 3 helpers.

East Providence 22, Cranston East 11 (Sat.)

Kloey Iacovone led the Townies with 6 goals, Dylan Flynn added 4 more and goalie Rai Flynn had 6 saves. For the Thunderbolts, Lola Delange scored 5 goals.

Ponaganset 11, East Providence 10 (Sun.)

Kloey Iacovone and Kenna Wigginton each netted 4 goals and Sydney Olson and Ava Soares each had a single tally as the Townies, now 9-5, escaped with a win on Sunday. Maggie Lacroix also had 4 goals, Jaina Yekelchik scored 3 and Isabelle Shields had 2 for the Chieftains, now 4-9.

Barrington 19, Lincoln School 9 (Sun.)

Emily Horn fired in 5 goals, Alex Hope had 3 goals and 3 assists and Lily O'Neil had 2 goals and 2 assists for the Eagles (7-7) in a match that began on May 9 but was stopped because of lightning. Ella Brown led the Lynx (1-12) with 7 goals and Maggie McDonald had a goal and an assist.

North Smithfield 19, Lincoln 4 (Sun.)

Kate Zonin scored 5 goals and had an assist, Eva Corriveau had 4 goals and 2 assists, Eva O'Neill had 3 goals and 1 assist and Kailey Salinaro had 4 goals as the Northmen improved their record to 14-0 with their victory on Sunday. Skye Adam , Andrea Urizar , Spencer Cameron and Faith Miguel had the goals for the Lions, now 8-7.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Division I

Mount St. Charles/N. Smithfield 3, Chariho 0 (25-16 ,25-15, 25-19)

Tom Matchett registered 11 kills and 4 aces, Ben Sousa added 4 aces and 9 digs and Carter Deslauriers chipped in with 10 kills and the co-op team moved to 13-4 this season. Brothers Kody Poplaski (10 kills) and Kasey Poplaski (17 assists) along with Jax Vachon (7 digs) shined for the Chargers, now 5-12.

Cranston East 3, Coventry 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18)

Division II

Barrington 3, Woonsocket 0

The play of Cam Kelley (13 kills, 6 digs, 4 aces), Donovan Park (12 kills, 4 aces, 2 digs) and Luke Andsager (5 kills 2 aces 4 digs) gave the Eagles their 13th win in 16 matches in their final regular-season game. The Villa Novans slip to 5-11.

East Providence 3, Pilgrim 1 (25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 25-12)

With DJ Lepine leading the way (10 kills, 3 aces), the Townies won their 11th game against 4 losses. Jack Eaton had 6 kills for the Patriots, who remain winless at 0-16.

Division III

Juanita Sanchez 3, Mt. Hope 0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-14)

Eliah Torres accounted for 4 blocks and 7 kills and Cristian Caceres had 7 kills as the Cavaliers cruised to their 14th win in 16 matches. Austin Almeida had 6 kills for Mt. Hope, now 12-5.

Nonleague

Cranston West 3, West Warwick 0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-17)

Christian Mak had 9 kills, 6 digs and a pair of aces, Chris Harvey recorded 6 kills and 6 digs and Jordan Cunha had 9 kills in the Falcons' win. For the Wizards, Colin Kelly had 7 kills and Jeremy Thoa had 13 assists in the loss.
