Editor’s note: This article has been updated to correctly reflect the terms laid out by the Brown administration in a letter to some students involved in the encampment.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Students involved with the ongoing encampment at Brown University that began Wednesday protesting violence in Gaza may soon face discipline.

A letter from Brown was sent to the students on Saturday asking them to voluntarily accept responsibility by Monday at 5 p.m. or face an Administrative Review Meeting from the university. In this letter, Brown says that those students broke the code of student conduct and listed five specific violations:

    • Disruption of Community
    • Disruption of University Activities
    • Failure to Comply
    • Unauthorized Entry or Use of Space
    • Violation of Operational Rules

If these students do abide by the university’s demands listed in that letter, Niyanta Nepal, a student and member of Brown’s Divest Coalition, told 12 News Saturday that, “They would let us off essentially or let us go with the consequences of probation with restriction. The deal would only apply if we left as well by that time.”

In the event students don’t agree to those stipulations by Monday’s deadline, they will be subject to a review process that could lead to additional consequences.

The university says they have taken down the names of about 180 students participating in the demonstration all violating Brown’s code of conduct. A spokesperson for the university previously told 12 News that students participating may be subject to probation or expulsion from the university.

The organizers of this encampment also have demands of their own.

“We’re asking President Paxson to listen to the results of the BUCC meeting that community council meeting that recommended for her to drop the charges against the 41 students and to bring forward to the corporation the student proposal for divestment,” Nepal said.

The Rhode Island Coalition for Israel held a counter-protest, with the group waving flags of Israel outside of Brown. Ken Schneider, a board member for this organization, told 12 News in a statement he hopes the university enforces its policies and has the students clear out of the campus green.

One of the other students who participated in the encampment is Rafi Ash, who is part of the organization BrownU Jews for Ceasefire Now.

“There’s many takes in the Jewish community, as there are many takes within so many communities,” he said. “We’re confident in our Jewish values and practice. This isn’t a discussion about Judaism, this is a discussion about genocide, a discussion about violence.”

This encampment is one of many similar demonstrations occurring at colleges and universities throughout the country.

The University of Southern California has already canceled its commencement ceremony this year.

A spokesperson for Brown told 12 News there are no plans to cancel commencement activities but these take place on the green, which is an important factor when responding to the encampment.
