Court filings: Officers ambushed in Eureka double homicide
A Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Eureka Police officer were ambushed when they responded to the scene of an alleged homicide near Eureka Friday night, according to charging documents filed Monday. The affidavit of probable cause revealed details of a chaotic situation at a property south of Eureka on Lone Pine Trail where Deputy Ryan Terpsma was shot and killed, and Eureka Police officer David Steed was wounded. Merrisa Walker, 46, of Eureka, was also shot to death in the incident. The accused shooter, 50-year-old Kalispell resident Mathew David Dye, appeared Monday in Lincoln County District Court after being held at the Flathead County Detention Center over the weekend. Justice of the Peace Jay Sheffield ruled that probable cause existed for the case to proceed. He also ruled that Dye be held without bail. The charging documents detail a scene where the defendant allegedly exchanged gunfire with the father of the deceased woman living on the property; Dye allegedly “hunting” Walker's daughter and a pursuit where he allegedly fired at several law enforcement officers and disabled multiple patrol vehicles. According to the affidavit, Walker's father told county detectives that Dye arrived at the property at about 6:15 p.m.

Flathead Land Trust receives grant to conserve 3,000 acres of the Mission Valley
Flathead Land Trust was one of 42 land trusts selected to secure the Regional Conservation Partnership Program grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to conserve 3,000 acres of the Mission Valley in the Ronan and Pablo area. This highly competitive $7.85 million grant provides funding for the trust to purchase conservation easements from about 10 producers in the Mission Valley Conservation Partnership project. Laura Katzman, a land protection specialist with Flathead Land Trust, said their proposal was selected thanks to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, who made a big contribution in helping leverage this funding. As part of Flathead Land Trust’s proposal, CSKT Tribal Council agreed to place 3,000 acres of tribal land alongside the Flathead River into a conservation easement. Katzman explained that their project area is adjacent to tribal land. A conservation easement is a voluntary permanent legal agreement between a landowner and an organization that permanently limits certain uses of a property to protect its natural, scenic, historic or agricultural values. The landowner still owns and manages the land and can sell or pass it on, while the easement stays with the land in perpetuity. CSKT communication director Rob McDonald stated in an email

The Polson Pirates saw their football season come to an end Friday night, falling 56-19 to defending State A champion Frenchtown in the opening round of the Class A playoffs. Despite the loss, the Pirates received a boost from the return of quarterback Case Cox, who had missed the previous six games. Cox threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Ben Aldridge for two scores and Eli Emerson for another. Frenchtown wasted little time taking control, as Eli Nahapation returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give the Broncs an immediate 7-0 lead. The Broncs extended their lead to 14-0 on a 40-yard touchdown run by Cooper Hardy before quarterback Cody Forthofer added a 9-yard scoring run early in the second quarter to push the advantage to 21-0. Polson answered with its first touchdown of the night when Cox connected with Aldridge on a 25-yard scoring pass. Roman Sawyer added the extra point, cutting the deficit to 21-7. Frenchtown responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Cody Forthofer to his brother, Jake Forthofer, giving the Broncs a commanding 28-7 lead at halftime.
