Several local shelters are participating, including the Mercer County Animal Shelter. Organizers of the event hope to find good homes for all of the animals residing in shelters.

“We have participated in several of them before and usually have a huge success with them. The fees will be $25 for dogs, $10 for cats, and most of our animals have already been fixed; if they haven’t been then that will include them to get fixed, their shots, and a free micro-chip,” said Stacey Harman, Director of the Mercer County Animal Shelter.

The Empty the Shelters event will run until May 15th. Other participating shelters in the area include the Greenbrier County Humane Society and the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.
