In early August, Molcajete’s, a Mexican restaurant on Massachusetts Street, temporarily closed before reopening in October with a new name: El Sabor Perfecto 2. According to night manager Ashley Ventura, the business changed its name to avoid customer confusion with El Molcajete, another Mexican restaurant in Ottawa. The owners closed the restaurant because they needed to acquire new liquor licenses and update tax forms that reflected their new name.

'Chef's Kiss' reopens as a new Topeka catering business
A recently closed Topeka restaurant is rebranding and opening as a catering and events business. Chef’s Kiss Ristorante closed Aug. 30 after only a year in business. The restaurant opened August 2025, serving Italian cuisine, wine and cocktails. The building at 1618 SW Washburn Ave. is now for lease. Head chef Kelli Page said personal health issues prompted her to step away from running a full-time restaurant. Page will reopen next month as a catering and events business operating out of The Woodshed Event Center at 1901 N. Kansas Ave. “Chef’s Kiss (Ristorante) was very demanding of my time,” said Page. “There were times I couldn’t be on my feet, and the restaurant really struggled.” She said running a restaurant required her to work six days a week, which impacted her health. “I had to be there," Page said, "and I neglected my health to the point that I was admitted to the hospital.” Page was searching for a commercial kitchen to fulfill catering orders placed before the restaurant closed when another opportunity presented itself. “It started out as me looking for a ghost kitchen I could do some catering out of," she said. U.S. Magistrate Judge Angel Mitchell issued a scheduling order Nov. 3 for the Prairie Band’s lawsuit against Kansas Lottery executive director Stephen Durrell. The lawsuit involves lottery sales on land, including portions of west Topeka, the Nation is laying claim to via a 1846 treaty. More: Kansas, Prairie Band differ greatly on land treaty meaning in lawsuit The pretrial conference is set for Jan. 25, 2028, and Mitchell’s order establishes other deadlines before and after the conference. A notable deadline involves motions to intervene, which are due Jan. 8.
