Dairy Month: Jisa’s Farmstead Cheese
BRAINARD, Neb. (KOLN) - A family-owned dairy and farm operation north of Dwight is producing a wide variety of cheeses and even yogurt with fresh milk straight from the farm. We caught up with Rod Johnson who handles some of the marketing for Jisa’s Farmstead Cheese. “After World War II, Lad Jisa came back from the war and started a dairy in 1946,” Johnson said. “Along the way, his son David joined him in the dairy and farm operation. In 2005, they decided to diversify and went into making farmstead cheese. The actual dairy is about a mile from the plant. When they are making cheese, they bring the milk up from the dairy, and they are making cheese about four days a week. They have a good sized farming operation to go with the dairy, so they are producing as much of their own feed as they possibly can. It’s now a three generation operation, with David Jisa, and his two sons, David and John.”
