    The bats finally came alive.

After getting shut out in four straight games, the Poynette baseball team broke out of its offensive slump in a big way, reaching double digits in runs in a 10-5 win Friday, May 3, over Lake Mills.

“The boys came out and played their best game of the season tonight,” said Puma head coach Davy Tomlinson. “We fell behind right away but answered back in a big way with the six-run second inning.”

From his leadoff spot, Chase Hansen went 2-for-4, with two runs and two RBIs. Going 2-for-4, Hunter Webster made things happen batting at the bottom of the order, driving in three runs and scoring a run. Brett Hackbart went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

“Webster and Ashton Meister combined on the mound to do a nice job against a pretty good hitting Lake Mills team,” said Tomlinson. “We have been focusing on minimizing strikeouts and defensive mistakes. We only struck out four times, and we had just the one error in the first inning.”

Others with hits for Poynette include Hunter Wells and Chase Meier, as Poynette improved to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in Capitol North Conference play. The Lake Mills game was played after it had been postponed twice due to rain.

Webster tossed five innings, allowing six hits and four runs — three of them were earned — and striking out two. Meister went two innings, fanning three and walking four, allowing one earned run.

“We had a rough time with Columbus, as we just couldn’t get anything going offensively,” said Tomlinson. “The games were close for a few innings, then they had a big inning in each game and pulled away from us.”

Wednesday’s game was a 10-0 affair, as Poynette was held to one hit — a single by Hunter Wells. Justin Wells and Hunter Wells pitched for the Pumas. Both allowed five runs apiece and issued a combined eight walks.

The previous day, Poynette hosted the Cardinals, and the Pumas finished with four hits. Hansen, Alex Busch, Chase Meier and Webster all had singles for Poynette. Webster, Busch and Wyatt Breuch all pitched for the Pumas, combining to give up 12 hits and strike out four batters.
