Springfield theater once at risk of demolition to celebrate 100 years
Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, marks 100 years of making memories at the Gillioz Theatre in Springfield. On opening night in 1926, Springfield turned out in a big way to open the finest theater Springfield has ever had. The Springfield Leader newspaper’s front page said it was “Springfield’s Wonderland Theatre Beautiful,” and an advertisement in that issue of the paper said opening night would be the “Greatest Event Ever Held in Springfield. You’ll behold a Fairyland — Gorgeous, Vivid, Awe Inspiring, Dazzling, Sweeping, Amazing, Bewildering.” The crowd that turned out was reportedly large enough to fill the theater three or four times, and the police formed a line to keep the eager crowd orderly at the entrance. Opening night tickets were 40 cents for adults and 10 cents for children. Times have changed, and for the centennial program there will be no charge. Doors will open at 1 p.m. Sunday with the program starting at 2 p.m. Tickets are free, but you do need a ticket to get in. Call the box office 417-863-9491 to get your ticket. The whole community is invited. M.E. Gillioz, a road and bridge builder from Monett, spent $300,000 to build the theater. Through his road

From the Darkroom shows photogenic pair posing for 1958 puppy match
In honor of National Dog Week, the Ozark Kennel Club held its annual puppy match, an informal, educational dog show, at Phelps Grove Park. At the event, children and teens ages 15 and younger could show purebred dogs under a year old. Adults helped handle the dogs with younger participants. Plaques made from Ozark cedar were given for the first in a group. Charles Beach (pictured in this photo that ran Sept. 21, 1958, in the Leader & Press) showed his Chow, Honey Bear, at the event. They, sadly, did not place. This image is part of a much larger collection of historically rich photographs from the News-Leader’s photo archive. Each week, the Springfield-Greene County Library will tap into this vast collection and present an interesting image “from the darkroom" and share its history. This image is presented in partnership between the Springfield-Greene County Library District and the Springfield News-Leader. Behind the Scenes at The Shepherd of the Hills
We recently crossed another Ozarkian thing to do off our bucket list, and that was to attend a live performance of “The Shepherd of the Hills,” in Branson. I re-read the book before we went, and familiarized myself with the characters who richly portray the foibles and qualities found in Ozarkers. Instead of writing a review of the performance, I wanted to meet the cast and go behind-the-scenes before the show, to better understand the foundation that brings this legendary story to life onstage. Thanks to Curtis Copeland, who is in the show and who also co-hosts the popular podcast “Ozarkian Folk Chronicles,” (with Hayden Head) we got a backstage pass into the green room well before the show began. I met several actors, director and the costumer, and here’s what they had to say about life onstage in Branson’s oldest and most historic drama. Director Jay McFerron promised me an interview later, when he wasn’t wrangling schedules, actors and other pertinent pieces of a successful drama.
