PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A search warrant as part of a Major Crimes Unit investigation erupted into gunfire in Southeast Portland early Monday night, leaving one man dead and numerous others detained.

In a press conference at the scene, PPB spokesperson Mike Benner said a SERT unit began to serve the search warrant at 5:15 p.m. at a house in the 100 block of SE 124th, near Burnside.

At 6:34 p.m., Benner said, a man pointed a gun at officers and began firing. Officers returned fire and hit the suspect. A medic with the officers began immediate first aid, but the man — whose name has not been released — was declared dead 4 minutes after the initial gunfire.

A gun was recovered at the scene, Benner said.

PPB Chief Bob Day said “it’s always a tragedy when we lose a life,” but he was thankful the men and women who risk their lives everyday were not injured.

Day also said the officer-involved shooting is under investigation with all the law enforcement agencies that step in during these situations. Four officers are now on leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.

Benner added the search warrant was connected to an ongoing Major Crimes Unit case and that “numerous individuals” were detained. Benner did not clarify if the deceased suspect lived at the residence.

The scene is an active investigation. KOIN 6 News will have more information as it develops.
