PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A former Washington state police officer is accused of killing two people and kidnapping his 1-year-old son, spurring a multi-state manhunt in Washington and Oregon after he was spotted at a Portland area convenience store, according to authorities.
Elias Huizar, a former Yakima police officer who was also a school resource officer and a substitute teacher, is wanted after fleeing the scene of a shooting at William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland, Washington, on Monday afternoon where his ex-wife, Amber Marie Rodriguez, was gunned down, police said.
A GoFundMe has been created by community members to support Marie Rodriguez’s surviving children and help with other costs associated with laying her to rest.
According to KIRO in Seattle, it was later discovered that another female was found dead in Huizar’s home. That person’s identity has not been released by authorities.
After reviewing the security tapes, Plaid Pantry CEO Jonathan Polonsky told KOIN 6 that he believes Huizar was spotted early Tuesday morning at the Plaid Pantry on Hayden Island. Polonsky added the tapes were then turned over to Portland police for review.
PPB confirmed a store clerk had called 911 to report seeing Huizar purchase a drink with a child in the backseat of the vehicle he was driving. Later in the morning, a vehicle matching the description of the one Huizar was driving was reported near the Bridal Veil exit off Interstate 84.
Police responded to the area but said they were unable to locate the vehicle.
The boy was described as 2 foot, 6 inches and 25 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Elias Huizar is described as being 5 foot 6 inches, 170 pounds and also has brown hair and brown eyes. He served as a Yakima police officer from June 2013 to February 2022.
If caught, Huizar faces charges of first-degree murder constituting domestic violence. However, future charges may be added.
Officials report that he had been on conditions of release on two pending felonies for second-degree rape and third-degree rape of a child. The total bail for the previous charges was $250,000.
Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to contact 911.
