LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A Lansing area pet store has stepped in to assist a Portage pet store that was hit by a tornado Tuesday night .

Preuss Pets sent a crew of employees to Portage on Wednesday to rescue fish from aquariums at MVPets, 7429 S. Westnedge Ave. The fish were in aquariums in the store, but after a tornado ripped through the region, the building had no power and experienced significant damage.

“A tragedy such as this is unimaginable,” Preuss Pets wrote on their Facebook page Wednesday, referring to the tornado damage at MVPets. “We are so glad their staff are safe.”

MVPets team posted on Facebook that they were unable to attach generators to the building to restore power, because of “the danger.”

The store noted Wednesday it had sent fish and coral to Preuss Pets.

“I’m afraid that one more night without electricity they wouldn’t survive,” the store posted on social media.

Photos on the Portage store’s Facebook show the roof of the building was torn off in places, and shelves overturned. Doors and windows were also destroyed.
