PORT MATILDA, Pa. (WTAJ) – More than 120 kids, ages four to 15, headed out to a Centre County park Sunday to try their luck with a rod and reel.

The 39th annual Children’s Fishing Derby at Port Matilda Community Park offered prizes for the largest fish caught in each age group. Everybody had the chance to be successful since the Bald Eagle Sportsmen’s Club had stocked the water with over 1,200 fish.

“It’s just an outstanding day for kids, whether they play on the playground, fish in the stream, or just have an overall good time at the park,” Mark Jackson, a member of the Bald Eagle Sportsmen’s Club, said.

Jackson also said two fish over 25-inches were among the largest caught. He said since the fishing derby has been going on for nearly four decades, many of those who came in the beginning now bring their own kids.
