Softball Recap: AuSable Valley's loss ends three-game winning streak on the road
AuSable Valley lost a heartbreaker to Saranac when they met back in April of 2022, and they left with a heavy heart again on Monday. The AuSable Valley Patriots lost 14-5 to the Saranac Spartans. AuSable Valley has struggled against Saranac recently, as their game on Monday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Top 3 on 3 for Monday, May 6
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Coming in at number three this week, a Saturday to remember at Thunder Road. The day kicked off with the annual car show, followed by a 90-minute celebration of life for the late Ken Squier. Governor Phil Scott, NASCAR president and Vermont native Steve Phelps and many other friends shared their fondest memories of Squier at and away from the track. In the Community Bank 150 under the lights, a three-way crash on lap 144 forced the top three drivers out of the race, paving the way for Chris Pelkey to hold a lead for the final six laps to claim the first win of the 2024 Thunder Road season.
Softball Recap: Beekmantown extends home winning streak to four
Beekmantown came tearing into Monday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs) and they left with even more momentum. They had just enough and edged the Northern Adirondack Bobcats out 4-3. For Beekmantown, this counts as revenge for the 13-4 defeat Northern Adirondack walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2023.

UVM women’s soccer looks for boost from VGFC women’s side
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont Green FC will host a women’s exhibition match against FC Laval of Quebec’s Ligue 1 on June 22nd, with former USWNT star Sam Mewis and UVM women’s soccer head coach Kristi Huizenga joining the club in an advisory role as they explore creating a permanent women’s side. The VGFC women still have a lot of things to sort out, from who will coach the squad to who will make up the roster for that exhibition match. We do know five UVM women’s players will be on the team: Jill Brody, Laney Ross, Bailey Ayer, Maddy Cronin, and Otter Valley alumna Olivia White. Vermont Green is no stranger to having UVM players on its roster, as members of the Catamount men’s team have made up a decent chunk of their first two USL2 rosters as well as a large portion of the team that competed in the US Open Cup back in March and April. The Cats have long been one of the most successful men’s team in America East, so the timing could be a coincidence...but their two best NCAA Tournament runs in the last 30 years have come each of the past two Falls, right after many of their players played high level competition in the Summer with VGFC. The UVM women hope to get a similar boost from their partnership with the Green. “This game coming up for Vermont Green will help show the talent of the UVM girls,” White said. “It will help bring fans out, build the UVM team community, and hopefully promote our team more for when our season starts up in the Fall.” “We’re gonna get a really good opportunity to play with players that we don’t obviously normally play with,” Brody added. “I think that we are all extremely excited, just to like get some more reps in, get some good high quality training in, hopefully meet some awesome other players...We’re really excited and I think that this definitely could help us in the future, just like continuing to play some high quality soccer moving into the Fall season.”
Year recap: UVM Athletics thrived through the 2023-24 season
As the spring semester pushes down the final stretch, UVM concludes an athletic year filled with records, accomplishments and success. Traveling all the way back to the fall season, the men’s soccer team set the table for what would be an incredible year for UVM Athletics. Following a disappointing end to conference play after being upset in the opening round of the America East playoffs, the Catamounts tightened up and went on a very impressive NCAA Tournament push.
