Construction creates traffic issues ahead of Penguins home games
Drivers heading to Pittsburgh Penguins games at PPG Paints Arena could encounter heavier than usual traffic as construction continues on Duquesne University's planned health sciences complex along Forbes Avenue and Pittsburgh Regional Transit's University Line bus rapid transit project through uptown — both located along key routes leading into downtown and the arena district. The work is taking place near the intersection of Forbes and Fifth avenues, one of the busiest approaches into uptown and downtown Pittsburgh, according to a community announcement. With thousands of fans expected to travel through the area on game nights, motorists may want to allow extra time as they navigate construction zones near the arena. The University Line project is a major bus rapid transit investment connecting downtown, uptown, Oakland and other east end neighborhoods. Construction along Forbes and Fifth avenues has included roadway work, utility upgrades, paving operations, lane restrictions and temporary traffic pattern changes. With work occurring near Duquesne University's campus and the approaches to PPG Paints Arena, drivers heading to Penguins games may experience additional congestion, particularly during peak travel periods before puck drop. Duquesne is moving forward with a new 80,000-square-foot facility for its John G. Rangos, Sr. School of Health
