St. Mary's Class of 1961 celebrates 65 years strong
PLATTSBURGH | The Class of 1961 of St. Mary's Academy in Champlain recently celebrated their 65th reunion at the Butcher Block restaurant in Plattsburgh. This class had the unique distinction of being the first combined 8th grade classes from St. Mary's and St. Patrick's in Rouses Point. St. Patrick's only went to 8th grade. The students, however, wanted to continue their Catholic education, so parents got together with officials and the School District allowed the school bus, which ran from Rouses Point Elementary to Champlain Central School (now NCCS) to pick up the SMA students at St. Patrick's and take them to St. Mary's in the morning and return them to St. Patrick's at the end of the school day. From this class in 1957 until St. Patrick's closed, students from every 8th grade class followed this tradition.
