PLAINFIELD, NJ — Many of Plainfield's walkers and runners will have to find a new place to work out between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends in Plainfield, according to an announcement today by the Plainfield Public Schools district. Construction of a new turf field and track at the Hub Stine Sports Complex will begin on Friday, May 24.
The track and field portion of the complex will close at 11pm on Thursday, May 23, and the Donald Van Blake Tennis Courts will not be affected. This is Phase II of the Hub Stine Sports Complex renovation project. The district held a ribbon cutting for the opening of Phase I back in October 2023.
While the exact date of closure was not known, this was expected since the Board of Education voted to approve Phase II of the renovation in January at a cost of around $3.5 million. Read Keystone Purchasing Network's proposal, including specifications, here .
The board recently voted to host Plainfield's annual high school graduation at Kean University next month for a cost of $90,000 because of the anticipated closure.
“This project has been in the works since 2009,” said Daniel Cone, Plainfield Public Schools Athletic Director, in the district's announcement. “The athletic department is excited to see the district move this project forward for our student-athletes and community. This is a great investment for all stakeholders.”
“We recognize the inconvenience that the temporary closure may cause, and we appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we work to enhance our facilities for the benefit of all,” said Superintendent Hasan.
Construction is expected to end around September 30, 2024, meaning that it will conflict with football and soccer seasons in the fall. TAPinto Plainfield will keep readers up to date on how the school district manages disrupted athletic activities.
