    PITTSTON AREA GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUPMessner sprints to first, second place finishes in Twilight Invitationals

    Aria Messner came within six-hundredths of a second of winning both of her events Friday night when Pittston Area entered a partial lineup in the Walter J. Godek Twilight Invitational at North Pocono.

    Messner accounted for 18 of Pittston Area’s 20 points to help the Lady Patriots finish 13th of 26 teams.

    Jenna Grieco added the other points.

    Messner finished first in 12.49 seconds and Grieco was fifth in 12.98 out of 53 entries in the 100-meter dash.

    Hazleton Area’s Gabriella Bredbenner finished just in front of Messner’s 26.137 time in the 200 dash where 50 sprinters were entered.

    Only the top six in each event scored points.

    Elinor Schardien was seventh in the pole vault and Isabella Dessoye was eighth in the 800.

    A recap of other action for the team in the past two weeks:

    Pittston Area 115, Berwick 33

    Pittston Area won 15 of 18 events, including all three relays, Wednesday at Berwick to improve to 3-1 in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 action.

    Aria Messner won the 200-meter dash and long jump while 10 other athletes won a single individual event each.

    Icebreaker Relays

    Pittston Area finished fourth of eight teams April 13 in the 27th annual John Tintle Icebreaker Relays at Wallenpaupack.

    Abington Heights, which also won the Twilight Invitational and picked up its 100th straight dual meet victory in between the invitational titles, ran away with the title with 112 points.

    The Lady Patriots scored 56 points to finish 10 out of second place.

    Pittston Area won the 400-meter relay and finished third in both the 3200 relay (4 x 800) and 3200 distance medley.

    The meet included the distance medley and the three traditional high school track relays in addition to team scoring of the school’s top two individuals combined in other track and field events.

    Annika Lien and Sadie Gregory finished fourth and fifth of 23 triple jumpers.

    Kaitlin Chernouskas joined Grace Callahan in the shot put and Jessica Soroka in the javelin to give Pittston Area two of the top eight finishers in both those events.

    Crestwood 91.5, Pittston Area 58.5

    Crestwood handed host Pittston Area its only dual loss.

    Aria Messner won the 100 and long jump for the Lady Patriots along with anchoring a 400 relay win.

    Pittston Area 121, Wilkes-Barre Area 28

    The Lady Patriots won 17 of the 18 events in the April 19 Division 1 meet.

    Kaitlin Chernouskas won all three throwing events. Aria Messner won the 100 and long jump and was part of the 400 relay win.
