A pastor escaped without any harm after a gunman tried to shoot him during a service at a church in western Pennsylvania .

Pastor Glenn Germany was giving a sermon at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Sunday when an unknown gunman walked up to the pastor, pointed a gun at him, and tried to shoot him, WTAE reported .

“He pulled the gun. It clicked,” Germany said . “You heard him shoot it. God jammed the gun so the bullet didn’t come out.”

Germany told WTAE that he had never seen the gunman before Sunday’s incident. He said he saw the gunman walking in and out of the church before positioning himself toward the front of the church near where he was speaking.

“He stood up and he smiled at me, and it was just a smile,” Germany said. “I started to begin to preach and all of a sudden, from my left-hand side, I saw him move from the back to the front of the church, and he set up in the front corner of the church and smiled at me."

“He comes to right here, and then all of a sudden, that’s when I see him pull the gun, and all I could do is duck and try to get out of the way," Germany said.

Clarence McCallister, 63, a deacon at the church, was filming the sermon when he noticed the gunman, WPXI reported . McCallister rushed to the front of the church, leaped over a railing, and tackled the gunman.

“Once I seen a gun, then I leaped out of my seat and leaped over that railing, and I tackled him down to the ground,” McCallister said. “The man had his back turned towards me, and I could see he would never see me coming.”

The pastor and the deacon wrestled the pistol away from the gunman and held him down until police officers arrived.

Germany lauded McCallister’s actions as heroic and praised him with a post on Facebook later in the day.

“He could have lost his life in that struggle,” Germany said of McCallister. “But he sacrificed himself for everyone, and he’s the hero.”

“Thank GOD for Deacon Clarence McCallister, the true GOD Sent Hero,” Germany wrote on a post on Facebook .

While pinned down, the gunman told Germany voices in his head commanded him to shoot the pastor.

“He said ‘the spirits were in my mind,’” Germany recalled. “They got in my mind and told me to shoot the pastor.”

Germany told local media outlets that he was thankful for not being hurt and praised God for his survival.

“I’m thankful to God that I’m still here, because he definitely pulled the trigger,” said Germany.
