Gus & Yiayia's on North Side waiting for more consistent nice weather to open for 90th season

The Pittsburgh area is finally seeing some warmer temperatures and sunshine, but one local institution is waiting until we get a little more consistency before opening for the season.

Fans have been asking daily when Gus & Yiayia’s will open for the 2024 season at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side.

Mike Spanos, who helps Gus out, says that they’re waiting for temps to consistently be above 65 with no rain before they start dishing out flavored ice balls, pop corn and other snacks.

He says that when they do open, May’s schedule will likely be limited to weekends until they have a full staff in June.

When they do open for the season, it will mark their 90 th .

Gus took over the 1951 from his dad, who started the business in 1934.

Gus’ wife or “Yiayia” died in 2016.

Yiayia is Greek for grandmother and Gus’ mother, Pauline, was the original before Stella

The orange cart is located on the North Side in the park on West Ohio Street. Mike Spanos, who works at Gus and Yiayia's says their open daily from 12-6 until they get back into their "normal routine."
