PITTSBURG, Kans.- Planned Parenthood Great Plains is set to expand its services into Southeast Kansas this fall, with a new health center opening in Pittsburg. Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains announced that the clinic will offer a variety of services, including abortion services, STI and HIV testing, and more.

"The opening of our new health center in Pittsburg underscores our dedication to empowering communities and ensuring that individuals have the resources to make informed decisions about their health and future," said Emily Wales, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains.

The move to open a clinic in Pittsburg comes after a majority of Crawford County voters supported protecting abortion access in August 2022, with 55 percent voting in favor. However, the community remains divided on the issue, and the new clinic is no exception.

"But a few Kansans don't speak for all of us," said Terry, a Pittsburg resident, expressing concerns about the clinic's arrival.

On the other hand, some residents see the new clinic as a positive development. "I hope so. Would be closer to home, wouldn't it?" said Scarlet, another local resident.

The primary concern for those opposing the clinic is the abortion services that will be offered. "In Wichita, you know there's a lot of people coming to that area for those services. And, of course, I'm not for abortion," said Leslie, reflecting a common sentiment among opponents.

Terry, voicing strong opposition, stated, "We believe that every child has a right to life. We do believe that parents have rights. But, where do you draw the line to just murder a baby? You know, a fetus."

As the new clinic prepares to open, the debate over its services and impact on the community is likely to continue, reflecting the broader national conversation on reproductive rights and healthcare access.
