PITTSBURG, Kan. (KOAM) - The Crawford County Mental Health Center Mobile Care Unit made it's way to the Law enforcement center in Pittsburg.

According to Director of same day access Jason Southerd the care unit which operates out of an RV, has visited locations such as Northeast High School and the county courthouse in Girard sense early March. In six outings, the mobile unit has completed mental health intakes and provided service referrals for five individuals.

The Mobile Care Center has positioned itself outside the Law Enforcement Center to reach more people in need. According to Dr. Jeffery Burch this initiative is a collaboration between Crawford County Mental Health and Pittsburgh Municipal Court, aiming to address the mental health issues that often contribute to criminal behavior.

Both Dr. Burch and Southerd say it's important to meet individuals where they are and providing necessary mental health services. They emphasize the value of active listening and understanding each person's unique situation. The program aims to help individuals access services voluntarily, with the goal of reducing stigma and changing perceptions surrounding mental health.
