With the college football season underway, Notre Dame found itself barely in the playoffs with a 7-1 record. Hoping to climb the ranks, the team prepared to take on the No. 1 team, Miami. A crucial game for the Fighting Irish, it seemed that the university was already looking ahead to the 2027 season. And the reason had little to do with football, as the legendary Bon Jovi announced they would be performing at the historic stadium. The only problem – the Fighting Irish had a football game that same day. The main word being “had.”

MISHAWAKA — On Sept. 5, 1872, a fire that began in a barn along the alley of West Second Street in Mishawaka took out 49 buildings in downtown Mishawaka and 82 businesses — totaling $140,000, or the equivalent of $3.4 million today, in damages. The fire marked a somber yet resilient time for the Mishawaka community, and from those ashes rose the Phoenix Building on Main Street and Lincolnway. Constructed in 1873 by John Niles, Henry Niles, Joseph Burt and Buford Holcomb, the three-story brick building served the city as an Opera House, First National Bank of Mishawaka and the Century Club — a social club and community space. Well over a century later, it holds the Phoenix Bar & Grill , an American fare bar with history placed on the walls and a thirst for live music. It also just happens to be one of the only establishments in the Michiana area where a customer can enjoy a cigarette and a sandwich at the same time.
