Asking around about Piedmont, California, just across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco and right next door to Oakland, one might say it resembles more of a close-knit village than “the City of Millionaires,” which is its historic moniker. Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, tennis star Brad Gilbert, and Little House on the Prairi e’s Dean Butler were raised among the area’s lavish estates and rolling hills. And an elegant mansion set behind gates on an elevated perch above winding Hampton Road, listed for $14.5 million with Ann Newton Cane and Michael Dreyfus of Sotheby’s International Realty, epitomizes the gracious lifestyle Piedmont offers its almost 12,000 residents today.

Known primarily for his Craftsman and Georgian-style designs, American architect Albert Farr designed this 1926 house in an Italianate style. Dubbed Hampton House, the stately heritage mansion sits on an acre of land with eight bedrooms and baths, plus a powder room, spread out over 11,870 square feet. Along with its updated luxuries and regal appeal, the home offers a slate of leisure and recreation amenities, including a tennis court surrounded by lush hedges.

Hampton House was built before Elsa Guggenhime commissioned Farr in 1929 to build what is now one of San Francisco’s most expensive homes , a French Normandy-style mansion that sold last year for $34.5 million . However, they have some basic similarities, starting with the façade, where balanced symmetry and carefully considered flourishes are key to their regal appeal.

For Hampton House, Farr used a classic pairing of white stucco with terracotta roofing for the exterior. Inside, the renovated and updated interiors include a light-filled foyer that showcases hardwood floors and a bevy of arched windows. A carved marble fireplace anchors the formal living room, which is filled with natural light thanks to an abundance of windows, and for holidays and special occasions, the dining room, with a coved ceiling and French doors, offers room for at least 10 guests.

The spacious nearby kitchen fronts beautiful dark wood floors that boldly contrast with black, custom cabinetry and the island’s marble countertop. Other culinary highlights include high-end appliances, from a gas range to convection ovens, plus a breakfast bar.

The primary suite is serene and spacious, with a marble-trimmed wood-burning fireplace. There are not just one but two full bathrooms, along with two closets, a sunroom, and a private deck. One of the deluxe primary bathrooms includes a soaking tub set between two Art Deco-style light fixtures that help you channel your inner Gatsby or Daisy Buchanan. Other interior highlights include a cozy den with outdoor access, a family room, and a games lounge with a wet bar.

The grounds are equally well appointed. One corner of the backyard patio features a fire pit with plenty of seating space. Other parts of the terraced gardens include thick carpets of grass, rose gardens, and a graveled dining patio amid sculpted plantings. High hedging hides the tennis court from the rest of the yard. A guest or staff apartment on top of the garage completes the package.
