PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Studies have shown that those who experience loneliness can feel more stressed, and many turn inward. Personal hygiene can suffer and rates of depression and anxiety can increase.

With a lack of self-care, there can be more social isolation. Drug and alcohol abuse can increase.

Loneliness is a significant issue in the elderly population, but a group that is often overlooked is teens .

Social media has made the issue even worse because those who feel alone often see positive images of others that may or may not reflect reality. It is estimated that two-thirds of 11- to 17-year-olds feel stressed out about loneliness.
