From screams to silence, scholar will examine the Holocaust through sound
A Holocaust scholar will bring a new perspective on one of Nazi Germany's most infamous attacks when she visits Muskingum University this fall. Sara Ann Sewell, a professor of history at Batten University, will deliver the annual Miriam G. Schwartz Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 12, in BSC 343, according to a community announcement. On Nov. 10, 1938, Nazis carried out attacks that destroyed about 2,000 synagogues, 10,000 businesses and countless homes. Several hundred Jewish men and women were killed, and about 30,000 Jewish men were imprisoned as the Third Reich expanded its incarceration system. Rather than concentrating solely on the physical destruction, Sewell's presentation will explore how Jewish people heard and interpreted the violence unfolding around them. Drawing from survivor testimonies, the lecture will examine what sounds reveal about the sensory and emotional experiences of those who endured the attacks and their
