Good morning, foodie friends,

The past couple days in the Peoria area have been a bit dreary.

Yet, you may have heard of the saying: April showers bring May flowers. I, for one, am ready for that summer weather – and all the outdoor dining opportunities which come with it. I’ll dish out more summer stories next week, so stay tuned.

Today, we’ll dig into stories of challenges and perseverance at local Peoria restaurants. I’ll also share the scoop on a new business which is serving up some sweet treats in the Peoria area.

'Proud of the area': Peoria business owner opens new restaurant

Christell Frausto held a soft opening for River City Grill on March 25. Before the restaurant was able to open, Frausto said everything needed to be done "from scratch" in the space − which once housed Trefzger’s Bakery.

“It was like let’s double down. Let's do it,” she said. “We’re proud of the area. We're proud of serving it.”

The menu at River City Grill features gyros, broasted chicken, burgers and more.

Peoria business continues forward after burglaries

Emily Cotton, vice president of Cyd's in the Park, said the establishment was burglarized twice in the past week. Since then, she said the business has worked to improve security. The Peoria Police Department has sought the community's help in identifying the suspect.

For Cotton, grappling with safety and security on top of operating the establishment is something “no small business owner – especially in a community like Peoria – should have to worry about.”

A sweet treat: New business brings bonbons to Peoria area

Salted caramel, raspberry with chocolate ganache and sunbutter cream are just a few of the bonbon options customers can order from Sublime Confections. Owner Jacqueline Gauthier launched the business during the 2023 holiday season and described her favorite bonbon, the passion fruit ganache, as "a mouthful of bliss."
