Update: Carlton-Wrenshall cancels varsity football for the season
The Carlton-Wrenshall football team will not field a varsity team for the 2026 season due to low player numbers, according to a statement from the school district. As we first mentioned on Monday, head coach Scott Arntson confirmed to WDIO that the team would not play Cook County on Thursday, September 3, and their October 21 game against McGregor had also been canceled. This leaves the Raptors with six games on their schedule as they try to piece together a season.

ASHLAND — School districts, employers, workforce agencies, postsecondary partners and community organizations from across northwest Wisconsin recently gathered at the Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland for CESA 12’s Youth Apprenticeship Partner Networking and Program Planning Workshop. The gathering brought together people who support students from different directions, with one shared purpose: helping young people discover their strengths and turn them into meaningful pathways toward their futures. Representatives from Ashland, Butternut, Drummond, Hayward, Northwood, Solon Springs, South Shore, Superior and Washburn school districts joined CESA 12 staff and regional partners including the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development — Registered Apprenticeship, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Northwood Technical College, UW Green Bay, Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative, and County Communities on Transition. Employers and community partners, including Walmart and Deb Morris with Bad River Unconventional Opportunities, also joined the conversation. Participants explored ways to recruit and support students, strengthen workplace mentoring, connect Youth Apprenticeship to Registered Apprenticeship and technical college opportunities, and remove barriers that can stand between a young person and an opportunity. Northland College's Maxwell Forest to remain protected
For decades, students at Northland College would leave the Ashland campus to study, relax and recharge among the majestic pines and flowing waters of the White River at the 132-acre Mabel Cora Maxwell Nature Study area, just off State Highway 118, split between Ashland and Bayfield counties. Here, students would engage in environmental research, outdoor learning, and recreation amid the splendor of some of the best scenic beauty the north woods have to offer. The woods and water making up this treasure were deeded to Northland by Maxwell, with the understanding that Northland would care for and preserve the property for generations yet to come. However, when Northland was forced to close its doors in May 2025, officials in charge of divesting the college’s collections and properties faced a difficult decision; how to honor the commitment made to Maxwell upon accepting the stewardship of the land, how to preserve the land from thoughtless development and keep it as it has been, pristine and a place where nature abided by its own rules. Many of the college’s faculty, students and alumni as well as residents feared for the fate of the land and sought help to keep it as it has

Cloquet football hopes to take a step forward after last season’s late spark
Cloquet’s football team is hoping to turn last year’s late-season spark into a strong start for the 2026 Lumberjacks. Last season started rough for Cloquet, dropping their first four games and losing their lead running back Jack Horvat to a season-ending injury. But the Lumberjacks bounced back, winning their next three games in a row. That late surge put them in the mix for a home playoff game for the first time since 2022.
