PATERSON, NJ – The City of Paterson has reached a settlement with Paterson Police Officer Michael Cheff to repay the salary amount of $200,000 to the city, Mayor Andre Sayegh and Corporation Counsel Aymen Abuoshi announced on Monday. This settlement comes after the City went to court seeking reimbursement for all monies paid to six Paterson Police officers while they were suspended and out pending the outcome of their criminal matters.

The six officers, Cheff, Jonathan Bustios, Eudy Ramos, Matthew Torres, Daniel Pent, and Frank Toledo, pleaded guilty in Federal Court to conspiracy to violate individuals’ civil rights, use of unreasonable and excessive force in violation of individuals’ civil rights, and for filing a false report.

"We're redefining police accountability today, alongside a comprehensive audit of the department,” Mayor Andre Sayegh said. “It's about addressing officers convicted of betraying public trust and violating the law. These officers, dubbed the 'robbery squad,' brought shame to the department. They must return taxpayers' money they didn't earn. We're spearheading this effort to ensure justice for taxpayers."

As part of the agreement, Cheff, the group’s supervisor, agreed to forfeit around $50,000 in salary and benefits he received while on duty, and to issue a $15,000 check to the city, Aboushi said. Given Cheff’s current incarceration, a payment plan was established to allow him to make payments over time, ensuring the city's financial protection. To date, the city has recouped approximately $65,000.

The City has also taken legal action against the group of individuals, some of whom the City has obtained default judgments against, with them currently in discussions with one of those individuals to potentially resolve the matter, and obtain payment from the city.

“A fourth individual we’ve also received a default as well,” Aboushi said. “This victory is not only unprecedented, but also sends a clear message: if you violate your oath, we will hold you accountable.”
