Chestertown council addresses Calvert Street incident, housing issues, more
CHESTERTOWN — “We may not get everything right all the time, but we can listen, learn and work to improve the county,” Chestertown Mayor Meghan Efland told residents during a Sept. 21 meeting. Efland discussed the police response to a permitted party on Calvert Street, housing needs and Kent County Middle School. Efland answered residents’ questions and outlined several goals the town is pursuing. Calvert Street police response The meeting followed a heavy police presence used to disperse a permitted party on Calvert Street on the evening of Aug. 15. Some residents criticized the response as an excessive use of police force. The controversy led to the formation of a nonprofit, as well as community meetings and discussions. Chestertown Police Chief Ron Dixon also addressed residents and explained his perspective on the response. Efland has discussed the incident several times. At the Oct. 21 meeting, she said she agreed with Dixon that the amount of police presence — rather than the use of force — was the primary concern. She said she understood Dixon’s explanation that he was acting on limited information available before the party. She also said she recognized his goal of protecting people throughout the community.
