Stanton Welch Transcends With Houston Ballet’s “Sons de L’âme”
In the quiet elegance of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the opening of the 2026-2027 Dance Season welcomed the Houston Ballet after a 19-year absence. A pre-performance talk introduced the inimitable Stanton Welch, AM, Artistic Director and choreographer for Houston Ballet. A former dancer with the outstanding Australian Ballet Company, Welch has a true pedigree as son of “Ballet Royalty” Marilyn Jones and Garth Welch. His move to Houston Ballet in 2003, following the great Ben Stevenson’s retirement, was a natural bridge to his full brilliance, energetic and masterful tenure at Houston Ballet. Then in 2023, Welch, after 20 years, decided to take on a Co-Artistic Director, the famed ballerina of ABT, Julie Kent, and former AD of Washington Ballet. Both appeared to be thrilled with the challenge and growth possibilities for each, the company, and the future of Houston Ballet.

Blue Box Café by Daniel Boulud
In Costa Mesa, a famous French chef provides culinary cover for Tiffany's social media-ready cafe. Over the 1,300-plus articles featured on OCalpha, you’ll rarely see us discuss the chefs behind restaurants – Jose Andrés is a major exception – so when we do, there’s generally a good reason. We talked about Roy Choi in spotlighting his noteworthy Las Vegas restaurant Best Friend ahead of its Orange County debut, shared some of Aitor Zabala’s journey to re-open (now Michelin 3-starred) Somni, and briefly noted Chicago Mexican culinary ethnographer Rick Bayless’s abandonment of Red O in Newport Beach. French chef Daniel Boulud is a similarly rare talent, a chef whose involvement with a new restaurant generally justifies a visit. So when we learned he was opening a Costa Mesa location of Blue Box Café, a small chain that originally debuted in New York City back in 2017, we were genuinely excited: We fell in love with Boulud’s cooking at another NYC restaurant years ago, and couldn’t wait to experience it again closer to home.
